A Tribute to the Days
Please remember,
When land was rich and trees stood tall.
The plot of arid desert was very small,
Until farmers came and set the place burning;
Then left the forest creatures yearning.
Please remember,
When we could enjoy a clean, fresh breeze
Not mingling with soot or soaked with grease.
In those days there was no need to go high places,
Just to find somewhere devoid of hazes.
Please remember,
When the color of water reflected the sky,
Never too murky or loaded with dye.
We needn’t worry about the fury of fish
Stained with mercury on our dish.
Please remember,
When we hadn’t possessed any greed,
And never took what we didn’t need.
We hadn’t yet created the hunting gun,
Just so we could have a little fun.
Please remember,
What we have sold
To Hell’s creator:
The Days of old.

This is a poem written by my youngest sister, nienyuan. She has been penning her thoughts about her world since she was 13. Hers has always been evoking, poetic and deeply insightful, notwithstanding her young perspective.
She just sent me this today. Its as beautiful as it gets...
That's some awesome thoughts... ...
great job NY!
Really beautiful...except that I unfortunately think that greed is inherit in man...we have always been greedy, and we just learnt to grow greedier and greedier over the years...and now, we've fed it to become astronomically unproportional, monster-sized..And we pause only because this monster threatens to bite back. It could be true though, that once upon a caveman's time, we only took what we needed...But then again, that might be only because we were limited by our abilities then. This is what I seriously believe..

dear erjie
in the modern homo sapien, yes, greed is an instinct. However, in the very very beginning, there was no greed. There was only survival, and people really only took what they needed. They had real respect, even early homo sapiens.
maybe...we were better creatures as animals... :)
by the way, sorry i meant "inherent in man"...dunno what's wrong with me..my english is deteriorating...argh.

That was a beautiful poem... thanks for sharing!
with regards to greed, i recently realised tat we sort of have been conditioned from an early age to keep accumulating more (seems we're taught that more is better than not enough). but at some point, people (some at least) will start wondering why we carry so much burden, and then start unloading them again... these days, i try not to buy what I don't need, as i can't carry so much anymore... it's tiring, and pointless, because what is accumulated will one day be dispersed. it'll never last forever.
